Crash Blossom
Today I return to classic Rubrick LiveJournal fare (apologies to those who were hoping for more dryer lint discussion): New York Times editorial infelicities. Today's NYT contained the following wonderful example of a crash blossom sports headline: "Can’t-Miss Prospect Who Did Returns at 28" So, it's about some sports draft prospect who used to be a tax preparer? I had to read the summary text a few times to figure out that "Prospect Who Did Returns" was not, in fact, functioning as a noun phrase: Jonathan Bender was a lottery pick out of high school in 1999 and drew comparisons to Kevin Garnett. Injuries forced him to retire in 2006, but he is now playing again, with the Knicks. Ah. A can't-miss prospect who did (miss). Got it. Now please try again. |

Point of Minor (L)interest
Given a clothes dryer which is shared by multiple people, is it better policy to clean the lint screen before each use, or after? It seems clear to me that cleaning it before use is globally more efficient. To wit: Regardless of the default policy, you still need to check it before use, in case the person before you failed to clean it (either deliberately or forgetfully). If everyone cleans it after use, they end up both checking it before and cleaning it after. But if everyone cleans it before use, they can eliminate the checking step. And yet... most of the people in my apartment complex clean it after they use it— it's usually clean when I check it— and so I feel rude if I don't, since it makes me a freeloader. (In case you were wondering, yes, tonight is laundry night.) |
